Four times a year, for the past three years, IDC has delivered Islamic Exhibitions at the Newcastle City Library: a public informal event catered towards the non-Muslim community, and an opportunity for people of all faiths and none to come along and enjoy the creative displays put together for the purpose of sharing knowledge of Islam and Muslims.
The Islamic Diversity Centre’s most popular exhibition has been Discover the Quran, an event dedicated to educating people on the authentic teachings of the Quran. The exhibitions include Quran displays with a 200-year-old copy of the Quran on view for attendees, guest speakers, an audio station for attendees to listen to the Quran, henna art and a children’s play area. Other previous exhibitions include: Jesus (peace be upon him) in Islam, Who was Muhammad (peace be upon him)? and Share Ramadhan.
The pop-up exhibitions have gained great positive attention from the general public, with a footfall of hundreds of attendees per event. Visitors have expressed their appreciation and understanding of the importance of having such events and activities to tackle stereotypes and misconceptions and help increase the understanding of Islam and Muslims.
