ABOUT
Islam teaches Muslims to care for the less fortunate and with this practice at heart, the Islamic Diversity Centre are committed to providing food supplies to the those in need of food in Newcastle via the Street Kitchen.
“And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, and the orphan, and the captive, [saying], We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.”
[Quran 76:8-9]
Every Tuesday, since 2015 the team run a hot food table at Monument in Newcastle city centre and give out free food to those that need it. The team get set up for 7pm and without fail, there is always a queue of service users waiting for the team to arrive. As well as developing a great relationship with the service users who sincerely appreciate the support, the Islamic Diversity Centre have built strong relationships with local caterers and restaurants such as Aneesa’s Buffet, Toro’s Stakehouse and others, who on a weekly basis generously donate hot food to be distributed at the Street Kitchen initiative.
Islamic Diversity Centre’s Street Kitchen Team has experienced life-changing moments and heard stories that have opened their eyes to the extent of support for the less fortunate that is actually needed here in Newcastle. Our team of volunteers feel the Street Kitchen has given them the platform to not only do their bit in serving the community, but also to engage in conversation and help clear up misconceptions of Islam and Muslims held by those who attend the Street Kitchen and the wider public, who see the Islamic Diversity Centre supporting the community.
We would love to continue our amazing work and expand the project by hosting the Street Kitchen more than once a week. However, to do this the team needs more volunteers. To get involved with the Islamic Diversity Centre and to make a difference to your community register NOW and become a volunteer. And if you can’t find the time to volunteer, then help us raise funds to keep this project going by donating here.
