Keep Them Warm was set up during the winter of 2013, when the Islamic Diversity Centre worked closely with AGE UK to offer support and winter essentials to the elderly in Newcastle. The project was originally set up in Walker where the winter essentials were distributed to the elderly at churches and community centres. There was an immediate sense of demand for projects and services like this and therefore the Islamic Diversity Centre decided to turn this into a monthly event and called it the Elderly Care Project, offering a much wider variety of care and support. By the grace of Allah swt this project has expanded to Teesside where we work alongside other organisations to provide winter essentials for the elderly within our communities.
AGE UK has found that many elderly people have sadly passed during the winter season as a result of not having access to or not being able to afford the correct and necessary care they need. the organisation offers such support and care to the elderly as this is a Prophetic practise taught in Islam and it also provided a platform to share information and knowledge of Islam and Muslims with the elderly community who may not otherwise have the opportunity to interact with Muslims in an open and public environment.
