Cleanliness is a crucial aspect of Islam, and the Neighbourhood Clean Up is a way for Muslims to put it into practise. It demonstrates Muslims taking the initiative to look after their communities.

Abu Malik al-Ash’ari reported: “The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, ‘Cleanliness is half of faith'” Sahih Muslim 223, Book 2, Hadith 1 (part of hadith)

The Islamic Diversity Centre aim to carry out the Neighbourhood Clean Up once every quarter, where they come together as a group of 10-20 volunteers and clean up the litter from the streets of the North East and surrounding areas. The group choose a street or area they feel has been neglected or is lacking in care from the council and as a collective they get to work and clean up the neighbourhood.

As part of a previous clean up, the team arranged to clean up Marine Park in South Shields where they had support from the Mayor himself.

On other occasions councillors have gotten involved and even members of the general public have joined in with the clean- up after noticing it while passing by.
